Students of classical karate learn “kihon” (basic movements) and “kata” (forms) to develop skills, speed, agility and strength. The difficultly of these forms and movements gradually increase as students become more skilled over time.
Student eventually learn “kumite” (free sparring) where technical movements are creatively combined with speed and power in a limited-contact form of combat that further develops the foundational attributes of self-defense.
Aside from the physical skills developed thru consistent karate practice, classical karate training may also develop mental and character attributes such as concentration, determination and perseverance.
